Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery and Aquarium
Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery and Aquarium is located directly downstream of Lake Sakakawea near Riverdale. The hatchery produces a variety of fish species to improve recreational fishing opportunities and facilitate recovery of threatened and endangered fishes. The hatchery's visitor center houses five 300-gallon aquariums displaying many of North Dakota's fish species and is open daily from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Guided tours may be available year-around with reservations. Two trails located at the hatchery link the hatchery to the Downstream Campground and fishing pond and provide a great opportunity for hiking, biking, fishing or cross country skiing. The Wetlands Trail provides a unique adventure and insight into the value of wetlands. The Lewis and Clark Trail brings you back to the hatchery and provides interpretation into the past. In October, trail-goers can witness the fall migration of salmon as they make their return to the hatchery.
